Believe or not believe:”I am a prince/princess”

It is interesting how you can watch a movie dozens of times and then one of those times, God gives you a download. Princess Diaries is one of those movies that I will sit down and watch every now and again, especially if there is nothing else on T.V. that I care to view. Yesterday happened to be one of those days that I caught the movie at this particular scene and God started to speak.

In this scene, Amelia has been transformed from geeky teenager to a princess who is going to end up ruling the country of Genovia. (If you haven’t seen the movie, watch it, there are some good messages in it). Once upon a time, she was bullied by the popular crowd, including the guy in the scene above. Her ambition in life is to be invisible because that is how she has always been treated. Upon meeting her paternal grandmother, she discovers that she is no ordinary teen, but heir to a throne. In order for her to accept the title, she has to go through an entire transformation to look the part. Here is where it gets interesting…although, her grandmother and others take the time to teach her to talk, walk, sit, stand, eat and conduct herself like a princess (they even give her a complete makeover), no one takes the time to mold her on the inside and deal with the self esteem issues that dictate her actions and what is to come.

So in the scene above, she has already been transformed. The world now knows she is not an ordinary teenager, but a princess, and everyone is treating her differently. The popular guy Josh she has been dreaming about forever, finally notices her and asks her to the school’s beach party. She can’t believe her fortune. So much so, she breaks a date with a guy/friend who has been there for her all along. She is now floating on cloud 9 and at this point, nothing else matters. At the beach party, she is swept up in the moment and Josh is able to talk her into going into a shack to escape the paparazzi. He feeds her a line about how there is no one in the world he would rather be with in the shack than her. She falls hook, line and sinker as you can see in the snapshot above. Later on, she discovers that he was only using her for his 15 minutes of fame.

As I was watching this particular scene, God showed me that Amelia fell for this line because even though she was transformed on the outside to look like a princess, she did not recognize her worth. She wasn’t the lucky one to be with Josh, it was the other way around. Despite the wonderful transition that was taking place in her life, the transformation had only taken place on the outside, the inside still needed convincing. She was still looking for approval and affirmation from those she thought would bring worth to who she was. If she ever got a hold of who she really was, she would have seen through Josh’s antics. Isn’t that how it is with some of us?

The Bible says in Romans 8:17 (NIV): “Now if we are children, then we are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” If we are heirs to the Throne of God, doesn’t that mean that our Daddy God is the King, therefore we are princes and princesses? If that is the case, why don’t we believe that? Why do we need to look a certain way, behave a certain way and have certain people we feel are influential (celebrities, popular, high-ranking) affirm who we are? Why do we look to others for approval to determine our value? They did not create us, God did!! He is our Father and because He is our Father, He has already established who we are in Him. Why is it so easy for us to believe what others say about us? Why is it we allow others to determine our worth? We are royalty, not because of a title, position or outward appearances, but because our Daddy God is King!!

So why did I write this blog??!! I wrote the blog because I felt like God wanted to remind all of you out there that outward appearances are great, but they do not last. When you allow God to transform you on the inside, the outside will surely catch up. Soon, it will be unacceptable to just have anyone in your life. Soon it will be unacceptable to just dress any old way and to conduct yourself in a certain manner. Soon, people’s opinions of who you are won’t matter. Soon, no one will be able to put value on you…Why? If you are a child of the Most High God, then no human value on the face of the earth can be placed on you. Nothing can match how Daddy God views you…He views you as royalty!! To Him, you are priceless!!!!
